Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)
Plaza OB/GYN offers Houston women innovative bio-identical hormone replacement therapy for those suffering from menopausal symptoms.
As women approach menopause and perimenopause they may begin to feel unwanted symptoms, including fatigue, foggy memory, hot flashes, low libido, and insomnia. In search of relief, many begin to research if hormone therapy is the right option for them. Although traditional or synthetic hormone therapy can increase the likelihood of various types of cancer and heart disease, many are discovering the benefits of bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) and how it can provide relief from their symptoms.
Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy Treatment
With natural bio-identical hormones, such as SottoPelle BHRT, women can find relief from symptoms of hormonal imbalance without the risks that come along with synthetic hormones. Our hormone replacement therapy comes in the form of pellet implants, pills, and creams shown to be a more natural approach to synthetic treatments. Some of the benefits from bio-identical hormone treatment include:
- Consistent and physiologic levels of hormones
- Maintained and improved bone density
- No negative impacts from clotting factors, blood pressures, or liver functions
- Reduced insomnia and hot flashes
- Improved mood and depression levels
- Greater sex drive and libido
How do BHRT Pellet Implants Work?
The pellet implants are most commonly compounded using biologically identical hormones Estradiol and Testosterone. Pellet insertion is a relatively simple in-office procedure done under local anesthesia. The pellets are inserted subcutaneously (under the fatty lining of skin), either in the lower abdomen or the upper buttocks through a very small incision. The incision is then closed with surgical glue or sterile-tape strips. Patients cannot feel the implants under their skin. Implants placed under the skin consistently release small, physiologic doses of hormones, which have been shown to have many benefits.
Pellet Implants typically last between 3-5 months, depending on how rapidly the hormones are metabolized. After insertion of the pellets, vigorous physical activity should be avoided for 2-3 days, or as suggested by the healthcare practitioner. Some patients begin to feel symptom relief within 48 hours, while others may take up to two weeks to notice a marked difference. The pellets do not need to be removed. They are completely dissolved by the body.
Generally, there are minimal side effects associated with the pellet implant procedure. Complications include minor bleeding, bruising, infection, and pellet extrusion. Other than slight bruising, the other complications are very rare. Hormone side effects vary and will be discussed with our OBGYN physicians.
