Infertility

Infertility

Approximately six million couples are unable to have a child. There are many conditions in both men and women that can lead to infertility. At Plaza OB/GYN, we do extensive evaluation to find the problems that can be the cause of infertility. After all of the studies are done, Dr. Balat consults with the couple to explain to them the findings and recommend a plan for treatment. This plan can involve medications, surgery, or both. He reviews the chances of success with the patient and explains the time it may take to achieve pregnancy. Between 80 and 85 percent of infertility cases can be treated with medication and surgery. Dr. Balat offers a wide range of medications along with several surgical options that can correct the problems leading to infertility. This will allow the patient to be evaluated and treated in one place, under close supervision. Only 5 percent of infertile couples will require more sophisticated methods like Invitro Fertilization (IVF) treatment, in which case Dr. Balat will refer these patients to one of the several IVF clinics in the greater Houston area.

Diagnostic tests:

  1. History and Physical Exam is performed to see if there are any signs or symptoms of endometriosis among other factors.
  2. Test for ovulation, which includes blood work on certain days of the patient's cycle.
  3. Obtain sperm analysis to check the male factor.
  4. Studies to rule out any anatomical problems, which include ultrasound to check for fibroids and HSG (hysterosalpingogram) to check the shape of the uterus and the patency of the tubes. Sometimes laparoscopy (outpatient surgery) is needed, as well.
  5. Tests to check whether or not implantation can be supported. This includes blood work and a possible biopsy.

There are several causes of infertility, such as sperm quality, egg release during ovulation, a factor blocking the sperm and egg from meeting, or, finally, prevention of the fertilized embryo from implanting and growing in the uterine cavity. The information gathered from the various tests will help Dr. Balat and his associates to uncover which factor is preventing pregnancy.

Endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are two conditions that can lead to infertility. PCOS is caused by a hormonal imbalance which leads to irregular cycles and infrequent ovulation. Patients with this condition usually present with acne, weight gain, and difficulty getting pregnant. At Plaza OB/GYN, we do complete hormonal studies and treatment options for this condition.

Treatments:

  1. Ovulation induction.
  2. Steps to improve sperm quality.
  3. Intrauterine insemination.
  4. Laparoscopic surgery to correct any physical factors like adhesions or endometriosis. Removal of fibroids may also be required.

At Plaza OB/GYN, Dr. Balat and his associates take pride in helping infertile couples find the cause of their infertility and give them all of the treatment options they need to achieve a successful outcome - having a child.
